Overview

BetterCapture is a free, open-source screen recorder for macOS. Privacy is a core principle of this project. BetterCapture does not collect, store, transmit, or process any personal data whatsoever.

Data Collection

BetterCapture collects no data. Specifically:

  • No personal information is collected
  • No usage analytics or telemetry
  • No crash reports are sent
  • No cookies or tracking technologies
  • No third-party analytics services

Your Recordings

All screen recordings created with BetterCapture are stored locally on your Mac in the location you choose. You have full control over what happens to your recordings after they are saved.

Network Activity

BetterCapture uses Sparkle for automatic updates. Sparkle periodically checks for new versions by fetching update information from GitHub. This check does not include any personal information or usage data. Update checks can be disabled in the app's preferences.

macOS Permissions

BetterCapture requests the following macOS permissions to function:

  • Screen Recording - Required to capture your screen content
  • Microphone - Optional, only if you choose to record microphone audio
  • Camera - Optional, only if you choose to use the presenter overlay feature

These permissions are managed entirely by macOS and can be revoked at any time in System Settings.

This Website

The BetterCapture website (bettercapture.app) does not use cookies, analytics, or any tracking technologies. No visitor data is collected or processed. The website is hosted on GitHub Pages.
